Final Presidential Debate: Recap

Obama was considered the winner of this debate by a CNN poll 48% to Romney’s 40%.  Today it was announced that Romney widened his lead by two more points to 50% over Obama’s 46% in the key Rasmussen poll.  Which in turn goes to show you that these debates really mean nothing in regards to voter opinion…they are just good TV.  I think the biggest thing our controversy loving USA got out of last nights debate was Obama’s “Horses and Bayonets” zinger lobbed Romney’s way.   Other than that this wasn’t a very eventful debate as was expected, the incumbent having the edge in regards to foreign policy, because they’ve “been there done that.”

Daily Mail – Key takeaways:

  • Rasmussen poll puts Romney at 50% with Obama on 46%
  • Obama denounces Romney’s policies as ‘wrong and reckless and all over the map’ as pair clash over foreign affairs in third presidential debate
  • Compares Romney’s criticism of ship numbers being cut to desire for ‘horses and bayonets’ and accused him of playing ‘Battleship’
  • But Romney stands firm as he attacks Obama’s Middle East ‘apology tour’
  • Accuses President of letting Iran get ‘four years closer to building a bomb’
  • Both candidates at pains to repeat Israel was closest ally in Middle East
  • Romney steals Obama’s thunder by bringing up death of Osama bin Laden
  • CNN poll of debate-watchers shows 48% for Obama, 40% for Romney

Daily Mail – Key Punchlines from the debate.

MITT ROMNEY

On comedy:
‘It’s nice to maybe be funny this time, not on purpose.’

Replying to criticism:
‘Well, Mr President, foreign policy – by definition – is supposed to be all over the map.’

On his opponent:
‘Attacking me is not an agenda.’

On the Arab Spring:
‘We can’t kill our way out of this mess.’

On Obama’s ‘apology tour’:
‘Mr President, we have not dictated to other nations, we have freed other nations from dictators.’

On America’s role in the world:
‘The mantle of leadership for promoting the principles of peace has fallen to America. We didn’t ask for it. But it’s an honour that we have it.’

BARACK OBAMA

On Romney’s idea of world leadership:
‘Wrong and reckless and all over the map.’

On Romney’s inexperience:
‘I know you haven’t been in a position to actually execute foreign policy, but every time you’ve offered an opinion, you’ve been wrong.’

On Cold War rhetoric:
‘The 1980s are calling to ask for their policy back.’

On Romney saying the U.S. has fewer ships and planes:
‘We also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of the military has changed. It’s not a game of Battleship.’

On outsourcing:
‘You are familiar with jobs being shipped overseas because you invested in companies that were shipping jobs overseas.’

At the end of the day its just two boys having some fun up there, trying make everyone believe what they are saying is right.  With Romney’s current lead and one of Obama’s best efforts (last nights debate) doing very little for him, it could be a tough fight for the big O.  I hate to say it, but with Trumps “Huge announcement” looming Wednesday it actually just may have an impact now.  If….IF its something credible, Obama’s battle ship just may be sunk (pun).  If it something baseless, it actually could have the reverse affect and bump his numbers right back up.  Somehow, someway trump has weaseled his way into this election again.  First he tried to run or announced he “may run” just to see what the reaction might be (which was a joke).  Then he tried to attack Obama’s birth certificate (which was a huge backfire), now this.  Sad to say though, I cant wait to see what this is gonna be.  I hate the guy, but he is good and making people pay attention to him.
